Not all pre-owned pots and pans are created equal. But when you know what to look for, second-hand cookware can offer incredible quality, longevity and character. Here's what we consider before bringing any piece into The Loved Pot Co. collection.
Heft matters. Especially with cast iron and copper, weight can tell you a lot about how a piece will perform. The best cookware feels grounded in your hands - heavy enough to hold heat and cook evenly, but still manageable in everyday use. If something feels too light or flimsy, chances are it won't stand up to regular cooking.
We look for timeless materials that don't just last, they get better with use. That includes:
We love a scuff. A bit of discolouration. A well-worn wooden spoon or a lid with signs of use. But there's a difference between used and compromised. Before restoring anything, we carefully inspect for:
Good design doesn't date (think: the classic Le Creuset casserole). We look for classic, practical forms - pieces that aren't led by trends, but shaped for function. Think simple silhouettes, sturdy handles, snug lids. These kinds of tools fit into any kitchen and are easy to mix and match. They also tend to be easier to clean, stack, and actually use day to day.
Some wear is surface level - a bit of rust on cast iron, a faded wooden spoon, a stained enamel base. These are things we can gently clean, re-season, or refinish. But some flaws go deeper, and we won't take on pieces that can't be safely or reliably brought back to life.
